We are in the day of nips and tucks. People are getting things tightened and lifted, altered and enhanced. As I was reading the verse of the day on my Bible app, I thought about how most all of us could use a tongue reduction. We are all guilty of negativity and gossip. I’ll admit my own faults when it comes to what I say, and I know I’m not alone.
People who gossip and spread rumors have been referred to as people with long tongues. While we often said “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, we lied to cover the hurt that comes from the same tongue that the Bible calls a “fire” in James 3.
Have you ever been burned by what someone has said to you or about you, or have you been the one who hurt someone else? We all have. Is anyone willing to join me in going to God to get a tongue reduction?
I’m with you for sure
Yes! Many people don’t realize that gossip in all it’s many forms is the most mentioned sin in the bible. Sometimes it’s called meddling, murmuring, failing to tame your tongue, but regardless we often forget that our words have tremendous power. We’re either using them to lift people up or to tear them down.
And it’s not always what we say but how we say it. A raised eyebrow, a significant pause, a carefully placed sigh. I have yet to perfect the art of keeping my mouth shut. Thanks for the reminder.
Excellent point!
Indeed! Let us follow Jesus and truly die to self! Let us speak with instructed tongues, discerning what God is saying and speak only that. Let us speak as those speaking the very words of God. As Moses cried out, O, how I wish they all were prophets!
I love your title!!! What a great procedure. Lol. I could use one myself.
I always thought that was a dumb saying because words are really the only things that can ruin your life and leave you alive.
Sad but true!
I was just reminded that it’s actually circumcision of the heart for which we must pray, for “out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”
That’s an excellent word!
Matt, Great lesson. Too often we don’t even realize when we have hurt someone by a too active loose tongue.
And Jesus gave us two cheeks. One to turn before the knee jerk use our own hurtful tongue, not making matters better, but rather worse.
