Baskin Robbins Church

For those who do not know what Baskin Robbins is, it is an ice cream shop known for its 31 flavors. Then in the late 1990s, Alana Davis sang that she was 32 flavors and then some. I think this ideology slipped into the church somehow. Instead of people of all ethnic backgrounds worshiping together despite preference and style, we began to give people more flavors from which to choose.

Since we started Overcomers Church, we have set the standard from the beginning that we will appreciate all Christ-exalting lyrics presented in various musical genres. All people are welcome to worship with us. We have had people come in who were not accepted in “white churches” because of their ethnic background. They love it with us and are loved by us. We have broken down the class barrier by not demanding people meet a certain dress requirement. Most everyone who comes understands modesty. We have removed the labels and done our best to be about Jesus.

I know that people have their preferences, and that is fine. I do ask that you continue to pray for us as we strive to break down denominational and ethnic barriers in the name of Jesus. While some focus on flavor selection, we focus on authentic Christian community. That is much more satisfying to the soul!

  2. Love the sign! What wonderful, insightful posts you have.

My husband, who was always a fabulous teacher, was called to his first pastorate at an older age. The church which had suffered two bitter splits over such silly arguments as music. He preached Ephesians as his first series of sermons. The church mended and became a very loving, generous and outgoing one. they have embraced us .we are very blessed.

But my husband is also very Biblical (as well as loving) and when he professed some Biblical Truths such as women are not to teach men – that’s when he went from “preachin’ to meddling.” Ha! Parishioners love pastors as long as they preach what they want to hear. There will always be a couple of members who are unhappy. We’ve been tested and passed the test and our little church has grown through Bod’s Grace. Some have even returned.

We call those who have been here since Moses, the “Old Guard” and feel we are only passing through until they pass away and then we can hand the church over to a younger pastor who will continue to grow this on-fire congregation. Thanks for listening and blessings back,

  3. what about the “Nothing Service” – nothing happens so there is no way anyone can say they don’t like the style and then again someone would be unhappy with the nothing happens style. I do see one advantage to the nothing happens church service, no sermon to prep!
