Matthew Winters (Honest Thoughts from a Pastor) 
I am not a pastor, but I have spent most of my working career teaching (in an industrial setting). I use humor for two reasons: Keep the sleepers awake (or at least more so) and to calm my own nerves. If the joke can focus people on the point of the message, that is a good bonus, but many points in a worship setting are not appropriate for jokes. Yet, I have heard jokes from the pulpit almost every Sunday for years.
